Tamil Alphabet

There are 52 letters in Tamil alphabet. The modern Tamil alphabet has 10 vowel letters, 40 consonant letters, 2 modifiers and a few other symbols. The letters and their english version are given below.

Tamil is normally spoken using a combination of sounds - vowels,consonants, nasalisation and aspiration. These sounds are represented in the Devanagari script by 52 symbols: for 10 vowels, 2 modifiers and 40 consonants.

Tamil Vowels

There are 10 Vowles in Tamil Language. Some of them are considered as partial vowels. Consonents in Tamil is made by combining the sylable to the first vowel. Tamil Consonants

There are 40 consonants in Tamil. These letters make Tamil words. But vowels are also used independently. By joining vowels to consonents various forms of consonent are made. Click Here to view the table and how to write consonents in the above translitration.

Letters like g and k represent the same thamizh letter.

To get the complete syllable, suffix it with an "a".

For half syllables, stop with the code for that syllable alone. The general rule of thumb is that with two touching syllables, the former syllable is a half syllable.
